How Iron Levels Impact Sleep

biochemistry behind restless leg (and why it's worse in kids with ADHD)

An earlier version of this post spelled “impact” wrong…this was inadvertent and because I never know if the correct verb is “effect” or “affect”…i’ve henced learned from my now homeschooling former english/spanish teacher wife that it is “affects”….there’s some english language reason but I just remember that affects starts with a which is also present in the word impacts.

(Also a good sign I don’t use AI to write my posts)

This is a clip from my Iron x ADHD Workshop where I discuss all the ins and outs of Iron. In this clip, I’m talking about how low iron (ferritin level is best indicator, not hemoglobin) impacts sleep, especially in ADHD.

If your ADHD kiddo is a restless sleeper—sheets twisted, ending up at the opposite end of the bed, constantly moving all night—they might not be getting restorative sleep even if they're in bed for 10 hours. Low iron leads to lower dopamine, which means their body can't suppress those constant movements that pull them out of deep sleep cycles. And here's the kicker: this same dopamine instability shows up during the day as hyperactivity and poor focus, and gets worse in the evening as their circadian rhythm naturally lowers dopamine levels even further. Before you try random gummies from social media, get a simple ferritin test—it's quick, cheap, and tells you exactly what's going on so you can actually fix it.

And hey! This week and next I’m doing a FREE ADHD Office Hours on Tuesdays at 1pm eastern where I answer your questions LIVE! My zoom room has a limit of 100 seats so if interested in learning & getting your questions answered (and hearing what other parents want to know) please register ASAP.
